Robert Oster Cities of America: Chicago Ink Review

I've long been a fan of Robert Oster’s inks that take so much inspiration from Australia, so I was intrigued to learn about his Cities of America series. The first variant of the collection I've scored is the Chicago ink, which is a lovely denim blue color with hints of green and gray interspersed.

When confronted with the question of what color a certain city makes you think or feel, I'm not sure there's ever a correct answer. More than likely, you'll get as many unique answers responses. For me, Chicago is vibrant yet cold and hard. A steely gray with some character comes to mind. But, there's also color. Lake Michigan, the Cubs, the bustling downtown, all the rich history that makes Chicago what it is today. For Robert Oster, Chicago is a dusty denim with tones of green and gray. I like the color he chose for this city, but (more importantly) it's just a great color for an ink.

The shading that this ink exhibits makes it every more difficult for me to determine the exact colors. It has layers, and that's exactly what I've come to expect from Robert Oster inks. It's not simply one color. It has depth, and it can even shift between light and nibs.

So whether it's a dusty blue or a slightly green-gray blue, this ink will continue to surprise you — similar to how a big city will continue to surprise you over time.

Writing with this ink is fantastic. If you've used a Robert Oster ink before in the past, you'll know what to expect. The delivery is smooth and predictable, and it works nicely on virtually all combinations of nibs and paper types.

Dry time is fairly good as well. In most cases, the ink was smudge-proof by 10 or 15 seconds if I was writing lightly. When writing slower and really letting the ink flow well and pool up in certain areas, the ink takes more like 20 to 25 seconds to fully dry. For most normal writing, it's a pretty quick dryer.

Feathering and bleeding are non-existant with this ink, as least in my testing on nice paper. You can expect some feathering on thinner paper or copy paper, but it's not bad considering.

At $18 for a 50ml bottle, it's a great deal. The bottle is a great shape and has a good opening for accommodating most pen section sizes. It might struggle a bit with large nibs, but there's always eyedroppers and aftermarket glass ink bottles for those situations.

Chicago belongs to the first series of the Cities of America collection, and there's been promise of a second series coming sometime this year.

Chicago is a lovely ink color that really finds a nice spot in between blue, gray, and green in a way that only Robert Oster can manage. The extra character found in the shading and other behaviors just make it more special.

If you haven't tried any of Robert Oster's inks, definitely give one a try soon!

Robert Oster Muddy Water Ink Review

Robert Oster Muddy Water

Robert Oster Muddy Water sure doesn't sound like it's going to be a good color, but thank goodness, it is. It's part of Robert Oster's Mudpack series--a set of inks designed to be used for ink art as much as writing, and which exhibit fun qualities in shading and sheening. The series includes Muddy Crown, Muddy Wine, Muddy Swamp, Muddy Sand, Muddy Bucket, Muddy Dragon, and this one, Muddy Water. I'm all for it.

This color is a smokey denim blue, almost a dark teal, that takes on a lot of different colors in its shading. It really does display some of the best shading I've seen in a long time, and it can even sheen with a bit of rose color, when it pools and catches the light right. It didn't show any sheen in writing, but if used for ink art, I imagine its full effect would be seen. Its best trick is appearing perfectly normal while simultaneously being very fun.

Robert Oster Muddy Water

It has a typical dry time of around 20 seconds, does not feather or bleed, and while it isn't water resistant, some faint trace of line remains even after a spill.

Chromatography shows the different tones that come out in its shading, from soot to sky blue. It's not a complex color, but it's a good staple color with the kind of character and elegance that draws us to our inks in the first place. Something about its tone and behavior gives it a very vintage feel and it makes my handwriting look like it was composed with a dip pen by candlelight. I love it.

All standard Robert Oster 50ml bottles of this ink cost $18.00, and come in the signature plastic bottle with the gold foil label. It's a fair price for a great quality ink.

Robert Oster Cities of America Miami Fountain Pen Ink Review

Robert Oster Cities of America Miami Fountain Pen Ink Review

What is it about interesting blue fountain pen inks that makes me keep buying similar shades over and over again? By all reasonable measures, I don’t need Robert Oster Cities of America Miami, but what about my stationery life is reasonable? Give me this ink!

Right from the initial inking of Miami, I was wowed. This teal ink was created to mimic the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Miami Beach, and while I can’t say I have in-person experience with the color of the water there, pictures tell me that it is stunning - like this ink.

Robert Oster Miami

Miami falls squarely into the teal category for me. It’s equal parts blue and green, and the right shades of each to make this ink stand out on the page. I’ve tested it on many papers, and it hasn’t failed to show off its shading, and has behaved perfectly.

One of the reasons I might be enamored with this ink is how perfectly it matches the pen I chose to ink it up in. I ordered the Pilot Custom 74 in Teal for a future review at the same time I ordered this ink, with no intention that it would be used this way. Teal ink looks great in any pen, but once I did an initial swab of Miami and saw how close the Pilot acrylic was, well, that was an easy choice.

Robert Oster Miami Writing

And the right one, too. I’ll fully review the Custom 74 in the coming weeks, but the 14k Medium nib in this model shows off this ink exquisitely. Have I fawned enough yet?

All sub-categories of Robert Oster Miami land in the medium range: Medium flow, medium shading, medium dry time. It is not waterproof.

Robert Oster Miami

Price-wise, all Robert Oster inks provide some of the best bang-for-buck on the market. $18 for a 50 ml bottle is more than reasonable.

There are currently seven inks in the Cities of America series. I was trying to be good and only ordered two, one of which has already been given away, and the other of which is not going to be leaving my arsenal for quite some time. The only questions left to answer is how many more inks will be in this series, and how many more will I purchase?
