Kaweco AL Sport Light Blue Fountain Pen Review

The Kaweco AL Sport is a familiar pen to the pen community for its stellar design, portability, and rugged durability. With a lot of different pen lines, you might buy one and think that you're done buying anymore from that line. Then, the manufacturer goes and releases an awesome new color to the lineup that's irresistible. That's exactly what Kaweco have done here with the all new Kaweco AL Sport in Light Blue.

From the inside out, this is a standard AL Sport. The only difference in this model is the color. Before we jump into the color, let's do a brief recap on the AL Sport itself.

If you've never had the pleasure of using a Kaweco AL Sport, you really should seek one out at some point. While they aren't exactly cheap, they're not really on the expensive end of the fountain pen spectrum either. Made of aluminum, they have a solid feel in the hand and do extremely well in regards to durability. You can throw it into a bag or pocket on its own, or you can install a small pocket clip to keep it secured. Hands down, this pen oozes quality, and it's a joy to handle and use.

The nib units of all AL Sports (and other similarly-priced Kaweco models) are easily interchangeable, which means you can have a nib customized to your liking, and move your custom nib to a new pen when you're ready. It's as simple as unscrewing the nib unit from one pen and inserting it in another. Piece of cake.

Of course, the Kaweco nibs are fantastic when they arrive in a usable state out of the box. However, they have been known to have some quality control issues that require some DIY tuning in order to get a useable pen. That said, these pens are great writers and will likely outlive you.

The nib I received with this review unit is an EF, and it wrote like a charm write out of the packaging. Smooth and crisp — exactly how they're meant to be.

Now, back to the color. The light blue is a beautiful shade that looks different depending on the lighting conditions. In some lighting, it looks like a cool light gray, while in others it may look slightly violet. Most of the time, though, it has a pleasant sky blue hue that makes me smile. All of the other hardware is a silver color, which compliments this cooler color.

There are several colors available in the Kaweco AL Sport line, including a similar silver color, but this Light Blue is my current favorite. Even though autumn is approaching, this color reminds me of spring and summer. It's light and joyful, and I can't help but keep it close even when not using it just so I can catch a glimpse of the color throughout the day.

If you've been on the fence about trying an AL Sport, this is a perfect one to start on! And, if you enjoy collecting all the colors, then this is a no-brainer. Stock may be a little difficult since they're brand new, but you can find one eventually when stock starts to normalize.

The light blue Kaweco AL Sport is a new favorite thanks to the beautiful new color. It's a great match with the Diamine Turquoise I currently have inked, but my next ink will probably be Iroshizuku ama-iro to match the body more closely.

Kaweco AL Sport Stonewashed Roller Ball Pen Review

The Kaweco AL Sport is a classic, beautiful design that many of us love, but we also probably assume that we're talking about a fountain pen when that name comes up. Well, there's also a roller ball version of the pen, and it's pretty nice.

The Kaweco AL Sport Roller Ball is exactly what you might expect — it's the same as the normal fountain pen, but with a different section that uses a roller ball refill instead of the fountain pen nib. In fact, you can even swap the section out with other AL Sports if you want.

In my opinion, this is one of the best pocket carry pens out there. It's well made, durable, and has a refill that behaves better than most fountain pen nibs. Even better, it can accept the Schmidt capless refills. Yep, the same ones found in the Retro 51. Knowing that, this pen was an insta-purchase for me.

How does the pen perform? In many ways, it's the same as the regular fountain pen version, so I'll just summarize it with: it feels great in the hand, it's made of durable materials with high tolerances, and it can withstand a lot of punishment. With this particular version, the stonewashing effect means you don't have to worry about making that first scratch because there's already an infinite number of scratches on the pen from the factory. (I hope I'm not the only one who has a fear of making a first scratch on a new pen.)

If the body is the same as the fountain pen line, then the most important thing to consider here is the refill. I'll be honest with you — the Kaweco refill included with the pen is OK. It tends to skip every now and then and it doesn't fit in the pen perfectly. When writing, the refill moves a tiny bit and makes a noise that distracts me when writing. I like the refill to be snug when writing. And, the skipping can be a bit of an annoyance as well. Like I said, it's OK.

But, you have to also consider that the awesome Schmidt Capless refills work with this pen. Any Parker style refills will work this pen as well, but I'm a huge fan of the Schmidts. Most of us probably had our introduction to these refills from a Retro 51 of one kind or another, and you'll know immediately if you like it or not. Basically, the Schmidt refills are really smooth, dark, and skipless. I've never had problems with them hard-starting, skipping, or any other problems that sometimes come up with roller balls. They're really one of my favorite refills, and I'm really happy when a pen accepts them.

With that in mind, I whole-heartedly recommend this pen. Just remember to pick up a Schmidt P8126 or P8127 with your order. The combination of a comfortable, nearly indestructable pen with an awesome refill is what joy is made from. The price for the pen is a bit high, but you probably already know that this is a standard price for the Kaweco AL Sports, and it's certainly fair due to the materials and high quality craftsmanship that goes into them. Kaweco AL Sport Stonewashed Roller Ball Pen Review

Finding the perfect pocket pen is a challenge. Most of us only carry one. Should it be a ballpoint that will write in almost any situation? A fountain pen that will give you the writing experience you crave? Or a rollerball that is a bit of a mix between the two?

I’ve carried a fountain pen for the most part for the past couple of years, either the Kaweco AL Sport or, more recently, the Kaweco Liliput Brass Wave with a custom nib grind. Now that the AL Sport Roller Ball comes in the awesome Stonewashed finish I wanted to see if it could break into what has been a fountain pen only rotation. Short version: It can, and it has.

If it wasn’t already obvious, Kaweco not only makes great pens, but many of their models are perfect for every day carry. The AL Sport Stonewashed Roller has the same great build quality as its counterparts. The aluminum barrel has a solid feel, threads nicely, and can take a beating on the go and not skip a beat when it is time to write or draw. Just what I want in a pocket pen.

What makes the AL Sport Roller a real contender is the use of a Parker compatible refill. It ships with a Kaweco-branded Schmidt roller in medium, which on its own provides a smooth, dark line. It’s too wide for me, so I swapped it immediately with a Moleskine 0.5 mm gel refill in black and went to town. If you prefer the pressurized ballpoint of the Space Pen Refill that is an option too. Any Parker-style refill fits, making this a customizable EDC workhorse.

Kaweco pens are built for this. They are durable, long lasting, and flat-out beautiful. The AL Sport line is made for the pocket as much as they are made for writing when it is time to get down to business.
