Kakimori Frost Fountain Pen Review

Minimal and lightweight, the Kakimori Frost Fountain Pen is an excellent, budget-friendly version of the classic cigar pen. It's just a little larger than pocket-sized, so it's comfortable to hold and travels well, and it has that elegant silhouette that's so popular with high-end pens like Namiki and Nakaya--but for a fraction of the cost.

The body of the Kakimori is made of polycarbonate plastic. It's very light, but feels sturdy. The finish has a frosted texture that's smooth but easy to grip. The body is fully transparent, though the frost effect softens the view of the converter inside the pen. In this dark Moss color, it looks like antique glass. It's also available in Purple, Red, and Clear.

Both of the pen's ends are rounded, and the cap unscrews from threads in the center. The pen has a long, narrow grip section that slopes gently toward the nib, and there's a fairly large step-up to the body of the pen from the threads. It doesn't interfere with writing, however, as it's set fairly far back from the grip. The cap does post, though I found the posting to be a little wobbly and insecure. The cap did fall off the back when writing once. However, the pen is long enough that it doesn't need to be posted for comfortable writing. There is no roll-stop, though, so the cap will have to be looked after, if it's not posted.

Kakimori Frost Fountain Pen Converter

The pen takes a standard international cartridge or converter (it comes with a converter, but no cartridge). It looks like it should be usable as an eyedropper pen, but its specs say not to, so I'm not. For now. The steel nib that came with the pen performs wonderfully. I got a Fine nib, and it writes a nice fine line that flows well and has never skipped on me, despite a rather feverish writing session in a coffee shop where I wrote under the influence of too much caffeine. It really is a pleasure to write with, and it's lived in my notebook pocket for several weeks now.

Kakimori Frost Fountain Pen Nib

One of the nicest things about this pen, though, is that it's reasonably priced. At $58 on JetPens, it's nicely in that "nice gift" (for yourself or someone you love) price range. It's not cheap, but it's not giving the same sticker shock that most fountain pens do these days. And for how it feels and writes, I'd say it's underpriced. It comes in a simple, triangular cardboard box with no frills, which is my personal preference, so they also get bonus points for the eco-friendly packaging.

Kakimori Frost Fountain Pen Writing

The only beef I have with this pen is that it's going to force me to make some tough decisions as I evaluate my pen collection. Because I only need so many cigar-shaped plastic pens. And this one? It writes better than several of my fancy, collectible, expensive ones. But I don't have to make that tough decision today. Today, I'm taking this pen to a cafe to write.

Midori Knitted Book Band Review

Midori Knitted Book Band Review

(Sarah Read is an author, editor, yarn artist, and pen/paper/ink addict. You can find more about her at her website and on Bluesky. And her latest book, The Atropine Tree, is now available!)

The Midori Knitted Book Band takes the concept of a notebook cozy to the next level. The books have never been cozier! It looks cute and serves several functions, an achievement I can only aspire to on my best days.

The stretchy sleeve is made from a soft knitted elastic fabric that slides over your notebook like a leg warmer. Both the top and bottom edge are cuffed, creating a capped pocket where you can stash pens, stickers, or even more notebooks. Because the sleeve spans the width of the notebook, and because the fabric is so stretchy, you can fit all kinds of tools in the pocket. On one side, a pen sleeve pocket is stitched into the fabric. Which did not stop me from putting more pens into the rest of the space as well.

The sleeve also serves to hold the notebook shut with the contents safely inside. It's a beefed-up version of the elastic closure bands so many notebooks use, but with much added security. It would be perfect for keeping a writing kit assembled for travel, where the notebook and its pens and accessories are all secure in its cute little sleeping bag.

Midori Knitted Book Band PLOTTER

On the downside, it's secure enough that it's not very convenient to get into the notebook quickly. I wouldn't recommend it for a planner or commonplace book, where you might want to quickly look something up or jot something down. It's much better suited to a project notebook where you'd settle in, unpack your cute little bundle, and work for a while before packing it all back up again. I can see it working well for a reading or gardening journal, or something similar. For me, I've found that adding barriers to using my notebooks often results in me not using the notebook, so it may not be the right tool for me.

Midori Knitted Book Band A5

The stretchy band is designed to fit A6 to B6 notebooks. I was able to get mine onto an A5 notebook, too, though this would likely permanently stretch out the fabric and it does limit the amount of items that can fit into the pocket when it's at its maximum expansion.

Midori Knitted Book Band Pens

The Midori Knitted Book Band comes in a variety of colors, each with a different ribbed pattern to the fabric, and costs $36.50. I do think that's a little expensive for what you get. It's a very simple design made with fairly basic materials. But it is very cute, and it carries the hallowed Midori brand name, which explains some of the extra cost. In any case, it's still an accessible price and a versatile product.

MU Kiss-Cut Clear Sticker Roll Review

MU Kiss-Cut Clear Sticker Roll Review

(Sarah Read is an author, editor, yarn artist, and pen/paper/ink addict. You can find more about her at her website and on Bluesky. And her latest book, The Atropine Tree, is now available!)

Stickers are basically tiny adhesive doses of dopamine. Cute pictures you can put on stuff? Makes the day instantly better. There's a reason they put fun pictures on Band-Aids. And it's the same reason I put stickers all over my planner: to prevent weeping.

Okay, I'm exaggerating a little bit, but it's true that some well-placed stickers can help curb the emotional turmoil of an overwhelming to-do list. So I always try to keep a stock of cute stickers on hand. The Mu Kiss-Cut Clear Sticker Rolls are perfect for this purpose.

MU Kiss-Cut Clear Sticker Roll

The immediately obvious charm of these stickers is their storage format. The stickers come on a roll of tape backing, and that roll is wound up onto a plastic spool. You can pull the tape of stickers out from the spool, select your sticker, then twist the knob at the top of the spool to wind them back up into their case. It keeps the stickers tidy and makes a charming desk accessory. A dot of rubber on the end of the tape prevents the end from disappearing into the case.

MU Kiss-Cut Clear Stickers

Even if it weren't for the nifty container, I'd praise these stickers, though. The pictures are beautiful with a watercolor look to them. The themes available right now on JetPens are: Beautiful Day in the Woods, Finding Inspiration in Nature, Enjoy the Little Things, Live Your Life in Color, and Capturing the Moment. They all have a soft color palette and calming vibe. The Inspiration in Nature set, which I got, has a mixture of pictures and words. They peel off their backing easily and stick well to paper.

MU Kiss-Cut Clear Stickers Good Things

Each roll has 62 stickers that appear three times, for a total of 183 stickers. That's a lot! And I appreciate that it includes so many unique designs. At first glance, I thought the price tag of $14.00 was a little steep, but after seeing how many stickers there are on this roll and seeing how nice they are, I think it's very reasonable. It's a lot of happiness rolled up in one wee spool.
